But who escalated it? Gruber spent a few hours many years ago, and hasn't bothered to incorporate changes in open source tradition, leaving Markdown a half implemented mess.
These people picked it up, and rather renaming it (which they should have done, but which also would have resulted in a tirade from gruber) they kept his name.
Que tirade from gruber.
That's where the quick escalation happened.
- smackfu 12y agoA private email "tirade" which is showing some restraint when you have as big a blog audience as Daring Fireball.
- tptacek 12y ago"Open source tradition"? Can I ask after your own open source contributions, so I can get a sense of the authority behind this assessment of how "open source" works?
- coldtea 12y agoNo need to see his "credentials". It's not like HN people don't know follow OSS projects and can't tell when the creator of one is being an inpediment. Even if that's not how all "open source" works, its how the sucessful projects do.
- tptacek 12y agoRight there: the idea that the creator of an open source product could be an "impediment". The belief that you are entitled to any convenience that could flow from someone else's work.
- bionsuba 12y agoTu quoque, his OSS contributions have nothing to do with his claim.
- tptacek 12y agoNo, that's true, but there's nothing else backing his claim either.
