I regularly switch between Linux and OS X. I don't run any AV, and haven't for years. (on either of those platforms) On Windows, some customer stuff scans for updated AV, so I have to run it there. I'd venture to say, you can avoid 90+% of viruses simply by using webmail, and not being foolish with what you click on. If it looks suspect, it probably is. :)
