Good. I think the challenge is a pathetic thing to do. Sure, give yourself a cold or something (or worse), or if you "pussy out" you have to pay money?
What a sham, honestly. That's peer-pressure, and bullying in my books.
- Walkman 12y agoIt worked, so doesn't matter.
- ubernostrum 12y agoSure, give yourself a cold or something (or worse) Unless the bucket you're pouring over yourself contains nasal secretions of people who already have a cold virus, you are not going to give yourself a cold by doing this. (going out in cold weather, contact with cold water, etc. have no bearing on the likelihood of becoming infected with rhinovirus or coronavirus, which are the primary viruses which cause the common cold -- there may be increased risk of transmission from going out in dry weather, actually)
- hmottestad 12y agoI remember reading an article (quote needed) about how the blood supply to the membrane in your nose gets reduced and thus makes it more likely that you will catch a cold from someone. So essentially. Going out in cold weather is fine. Going out in cold weather and then ending up at a bar with people who have colds already. Not such a good idea.
- jwdunne 12y agoThat's quite a negative light you cast over it, where I live it's all fun and games. I've been nominated, not done the challenge and not donated yet, without pressure to do so. I imagine if there's real bullying and peer pressure where you live, something's gone seriously wrong somewhere in the chain. I guess it's not quite pathetic if you have been affected by ALS. The show of support could very make their day or in the very least spur donations to a cause they support. It seems like these things are going to continue anyway, given the success of the no-make-up-selfie trend and this trend.
- bostik 12y agoI would say the ASL foundation is pretty well stocked right now, having received close to $100M. Not to mention the visibility from the media attention, which might well be worth another $100M, albeit over a longer timespan. If you want to donate to more generic causes, you could pick one of my two favourites: EFF and Doctors Without Borders. Or do even better: donate to causes you think are important. Don't listen to me, or anyone else.
- TeMPOraL 12y agoI'll just go with stupid, not more and not less than any similar Facebook challenges that have been circulating the network for the last 6 months. Also, you won't get cold, as @ubernostrum dutifully explained.
