The ice bucket challenge - if proven effective - should be reused again for other charities etc. If they're trademarking this for commercial purposes they're wankers.
- scoot 12y agoThe ice bucket challenge is in essence a pyramid scheme / chain letter. I think it's a one=time deal (thank goodness!)
- danieldk 12y agoIt expands exponentially, but misses one fundamental trait of a pyramid scheme: in a pyramid scheme a person promises the next person a reward if he/she recruits other people, which is obviously not sustainable. The ice bucket challenge doesn't. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramid_scheme https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramid_scheme
- pawn 12y agoThe moral reward, in this case, should hopefully come from the donation itself more than challenging someone else to do it. There's also the social reward of being a part of what everybody else is a part of.
- scrollaway 12y agoThe IBC promises a "moral reward" in some way. While arguably the monetary reward is a core concept of a pyramid scheme, the concept remains the same: 1. Get asked to perform an action 2. Ask x more people to perform the action in exchange for a moral reward (you're helping the cause!) 3. Those people in turn start at 1.
- JohnnyGrey 12y agoTrue! Already raised $100 Mill as it grows over the public.
- Walkman 12y agoIt was successful because it was unique thing and only very high profile persons did it in the first place like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, lot of well known celebrities, etc.. I think almost nobody would care a second wave of this, because "We saw this already."
- TeMPOraL 12y agoLike every "viral" thing on the Internet, it only works one time. The novelty effect is the only thing that makes such thing work.
