Sample size of 1, but I quit eating sugar two months ago and my allergies (or allergy-like symptoms) are almost gone. That's after a lifetime of a stuffed up nose and frequent sinus infections. The weird thing is my nose cleared up after around 5 days, but the sinus headache lasted another two weeks. My hunch is that I'm prone to fungal infections, but who knows.
- rsl7 12y agoI know several people who have had allergies disappear after a major diet change. My dad, on the other had, is suffering increasingly from allergies in his advanced age (>70) and refuses to even consider the notion that diet has anything to do with it, and won't even experiment.
- josephjrobison 12y agoAgree with you, and here's another sample size of 1. My nose and sinuses only get stuffed up when I eat anything more than a small amount of dairy, my body is guaranteed to feel run down and susceptible to common cold/flu when I have large amounts of sugar. Combo of many other things maybe, but those two things I know for sure.
- raamdev 12y agoAnother sample size of 1 (so I guess that makes us a sample size of 2): I had eczema from 6 months old until 18 years old, and asthma from 13 years old to 18 years old. The asthma was bad enough that walking up a flight of stairs winded me. When I moved out of home at 18, both my eczema and asthma _disappeared_. Doctors had no explanation. I eventually realized that one major thing that changed in my diet was milk: I had unintentionally stopped drinking milk when I moved out home. (We consumed gallons of milk every week growing up: good for the bones!) After several months of no milk, no eczema for the first time in my life, and my asthma all cleared up, I drank 1/2 a cup of whole milk to test my theory. Within minutes my body felt sick. The next day I _was_ sick, and it took several weeks before my body felt normal again. When I avoid dairy, my body feels better.

- cesarbs 12y agoA bit off-topic, but could you describe what your sinus headache was like? I've been having a lot of pain over my eyebrows for more than a month now. I've read that this could be related to a persistent sinus infection/inflammation, and my GP confirmed this could be the case (but then did nothing about it). I don't get much nasal discharge nor anything, just an occasional stuffy nose at night, but still I wonder if it could be a sinus thing.
- chrismealy 12y agoI'd have pain over my eyebrows and under my eyes near my nose. No runny nose -- I have nasal polyps so the stuff in there couldn't come out.
- driverdan 12y agoThis is not evidence that your diet had anything to do with it. Correlation is not causation. It could have been the end of the allergy season, you may have cleaned your house or replaced something you were allergic to. It could have been a whole host of other things.
