Apparently the Sandstorm team [1] recently ported MediaGoblin over, so this is particularly exciting. It looks like the big addition is that they're paving the path for federation, so soon there could well be an actually decentralized media sharing system...
[1] Sandstorm is an app sandboxing environment conceived by the designer of Protobuf/Cap'nProto; as an aside, the IndieGogo for Sandstorm is nearly funded, but ends in only 5 days... it was on HN recently, but otherwise, http://sandstorm.io http://sandstorm.io
- higherpurpose 12y agoSpeaking of Sandstorm, they have 13 percent of their campaign left unfunded, and only 5 days to go. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sandstorm-io-personal-cloud-platform https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sandstorm-io-personal-clo...

- scoggs 12y agoI'm not very technical in the knowledge needed to setup sandstorm, I've looked all over for a guide that works for me but I've come up empty. I've tried about 5 or 6 different ways to get things going and I've struck out. Are there any resources out there for extreme beginners or anybody who is willing to help a very interested person out? I'd love to write a guide using the experience of learning from scratch, I've never installed anything like this before and I'm sure I'm not the only one missing out!
- kentonv 12y agoWe (sandstorm.io) have work to do on getting the self-hosted install easier. Currently it's easy if you already have a Linux machine: https://github.com/sandstorm-io/sandstorm#installing-the-easy-way https://github.com/sandstorm-io/sandstorm#installing-the-eas... But eventually we should have an installation process or guide that covers setting up a VM as well, for those who don't already run Linux. All that said, we also plan to offer managed Sandstorm hosting for $5/mo starting early next year. This is what you see if you try demo.sandstorm.io. In this case you don't have to do any setup.
- scoggs 12y agoRight, and I'd probably spring for the $5/mo if I just got a more open ended chance to test it. I have ran into the most trouble setting up linux as a new OS and with Virtualbox. I've gotten both installed and then tripped up on getting sandstorm to execute properly. It's a tad frustrating but I have no experience to fall back on and sandstorm hasn't been around long enough to have tons of problems posted w/ fixes online.
- kentonv 12y agoPlease feel free to file bugs on Github and/or ask questions on sandstorm-dev! It will help us figure out what most needs improvement. https://groups.google.com/group/sandstorm-dev https://groups.google.com/group/sandstorm-dev Curious what you mean by "more open ended change to test it". You mean not limited to one hour as demo.sandstorm.io is?
- scoggs 12y agoI guess I feel like using your demo doesn't teach me what I need to know about installing it, and having a custom installation of my own on my own server to play around with. The demo you guys have is great and is the reason I wanted to get sandstorm for myself. There is nothing wrong with the demo what-so-ever, it's just already ready already and it didn't teach me how to set it up for myself. No harm, no foul. I understand there is a base level of knowledge needed to get this started and you guys are at no fault for that.
