Throw money at the problem, ie scale up your servers. Move to a VPS/Cloud if you're on your own hardware. The Database is often the hardest part to scale, use services such as Amazon RDS or Heroku Postgres.
Add monitoring to wake you up if the site is down (pingdom is great).
