Tell HN: Earthquake detection with smartphone accelerometers
If we had millions of phones measuring the recent California earthquake, we'd be able to detect tremors and distribute alerts even faster.
Technical thoughts:
1) Research has been done to detect seismic activity with an individual smartphone accelerometer. http://www.isciencetimes.com/articles/6142/20130930/smartphones-detect-earthquakes-iphone-mems-accelerometer-seismic.htm
2) To reduce noise and save battery life, I think the app can only run when the device is plugged in and charging. This way it's likely to be static and on a surface (table)
3) The phones could be M2M, and the network could operate without a central hub, detecting and triangulating info amongst themselves.
4) Smartphone users can be alerted of the event immediately, and other systems could also be connected if there's any reason to do so (building systems, door locks, etc).
