Product Hunt iOS App
- qrazhan 12y agoApp looks great! I saw they made their website mobile friendly as well, and that looks really nice too. Shameless plug: if you're on Android, checkout an app I made using the new PH API: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qrazhan.hunter2 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qrazhan.hu...
- BrechtVds 12y agoLove the "text me a link" feature! The app itself looks nice and clean as well, with some great animations (the pull-to-refresh one, for example).
- rrhoover 12y agoExcited to finally release our iOS app, created by the amazingly talented David McKinney (http://davidmckinney.com/ http://davidmckinney.com/). This version is still very early and we're working through some bugs but you gotta ship sometime, right? :) AMA!
- Sujan 12y agoVery nice first version. Is a crashreporter integrated so you get a report of all the ways I broke it? Also: Who built the landing page? Also great.
- athesyn 12y ago> I like making things Don't know about the app, but whats with the lame attempt to sound as unpretentious as possible. It still comes off as pretentiousness.
- indiekid 12y agoHe likes making things? What's so wrong with that? There's pretension in that statement, or a lack thereof either.
- btrautsc 12y agothis is awesome.
- goeric 12y agoCongrats! "Text me a link" feature isn't working for me. It's been a few minutes now, no link :(. Also, sign in with Twitter is crashing the app.
- rrhoover 12y agoYikes! Sorry about that, goeric. Mind emailing me your phone number and twitter username to ryan@producthunt.com? We're working through some bugs now. EDIT: looks like we ran out of Twilio credits. Just reloaded!
- lachlanjc 12y agoHave you seen Plivo? It's pretty awesome.
- topherjaynes 12y agophew, I thought I just didn't know my number and sent it to the wrong phone
- jbail 12y agoWhy build a native iOS app? What capabilities of the phone are you utilizing? I ask because this was my experience: I just tried to download the app on my iPhone 4s and I couldn't download it because my iOS version is too old. My Nexus 5, obviously, won't be able to download it either because it's an Android device. Unless you're doing something majorly different in native than you are in the web version, I don't understand the iOS lock-in and the need to have the most recent iOS version. I mean, I do get it from a developers point of view...it's less devices to test...but it comes at the cost of a lot of people not being able to use it.
- smackfu 12y agoA 4S supports iOS 7 and 8. Are you still running iOS 6? I think that's a very small group of people at this point.
- jbail 12y agoI am on iOS 6. I've stopped upgrading (intentionally) because every iOS upgrade significantly downgrades the performance of the device. My iPad is a few versions old for the same reason
- rrhoover 12y agoGood question, jbail. The first version of the app admittedly looks very similar to the web experience. We wanted to get something out sooner, rather than later and the most requested feature since Product Hunt launched, has been an iOS app. Our most dedicated fans visit the site multiple times per day so we wanted to make it more accessible. Although our mobile web version isn't terrible, the native app is faster and easier to use. More importantly, it sets us up to do some interesting things later on, such as interactive push notifications.
- fourstar 12y agoWhat did he get out of making it for you?
- roc123 12y agoHow do you plan to keep it from overflowing with product submissions? The more submissions you get the harder it becomes for a product to get seen, seems like the same problem that most app stores have. Do you have a daily limit for product submissions? Will the list be curated? Also a top weekly and top monthly would be good IMO.
- osconfused 12y agoNeat and interesting timing. This morning I had a dream about a product hunt app for iOS with a tinder-like interface. "Swipe left" to upvote.
- lachlanjc 12y agoSomeone actually built that, it's called ProducTind :) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/productind/id891384124?ls=1&mt=8 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/productind/id891384124?ls=1&...
- ecesena 12y ago[self-promo/feedback req] if you're a fan of swipe left for upvote, I'd be interested in your opinion on Theneeds iphone app. Also, if you don't mind, what do you think about the tooltips to explain the feature?
- osconfused 12y agoyou have a link?
- ecesena 12y agoSorry, didn't want to sound too spammy: http://www.theneeds.com/p/iphone http://www.theneeds.com/p/iphone Feel free to reach me privately if you prefer, email in the profile.
- mmahemoff 12y agoI'm curious: Wouldn't 2 buttons be better than a swipe interface? Perhaps Tinder needs swipe because there's more downside of an error; but I'd think a Hot and a Not button would be faster and still reliable enough for general product liking.
- ecesena 12y agoIn my experience, swiping is more engaging. In our app we have both swipe and buttons. When I show the app to people (in person, I mean) what I usually see is that as soon as they discover swiping, the switch using that. As I said, it's just a limited and in person experience, I have no data, but I'd be interested if anyone could support/confute my thesis.
- ins0 12y agonice. sidestep - kaspersky internet security block your side as "phishing site"
- ceejayoz 12y agoFalse positives happen all the time with these sorts of tools. We got flagged for phishing by AVG because we built a promotional website for a bank. Their reps were pretty nasty until someone from the bank joined in to vouch for us.
- cllns 12y agoRe: "Fight the FOMO" This app is seems to be feeding the fear of missing out, rather than fighting it.
- thinkling 12y agoAh, that's what FOMO means, thanks. Yeah, my first impression is that this is most useful to people with discretionary income burning a hole in their pockets, looking for something to spend it on. Not what I'm looking for, personally. Am I missing the point?
