Agreed but even there were a monopoly for the interpreter/compiler you would see people marrying with a specific version and having the implementer to maintain

Agreed but even there were a monopoly for the interpreter/compiler you would see people marrying with a specific version and having the implementer to maintain two different branches of the compiler for security reasons.
