Interesting article - I liked how it was based on a personal experience. As a side note, there's a pretty serious misunderstanding of the Apache Software Foundation in the article. Apache provides no money to developers. Instead it provides community support, infrastructure, and legal help to more than 150 projects under its umbrella. In particular the Apache focus on building communities means that a project has a life beyond involvement of a single contributor or company. Fundraising for development is reasonable and helpful, but must be balanced with contributor diversity. Otherwise the the project will fall apart when the funding stops, leaving users in the lurch. (note - I'm an Apache Software Foundation member, though I speak for myself in this comment).
