And what would the alternative to basic income be? Letting the unemployed starve?

  That was easy to answer when low-level jobs were available, because most people take pride in having gainful employment, even it it involved putting hamburgers into a bag. But those low-level jobs are drying up, so the old remedies and incentives aren't going to work any more. The solution isn't at all obvious. I will say this -- anyone who comes up with a workable solution that passes muster with the various political forces at work, will deserve his or her resulting fame.
