No, you're perfectly right. And while HP may be up to date right now, it'll be out of date next month and it will keep getting more and more obsolete until the next release in a year or so.
- chrisseaton 12y agoWhy does it get out of date? Can't you just cabal install any newer library that you want? Is it that you can't update GHC in it?
- dbpatterson 12y agoThe issue is that platform packages are in the global package database, which doesn't play well with the (amazingly useful) sandboxing that cabal provides. And may cause other problems too.
- autodidakto 12y agoDo you recommend installing just ghc[1] and cabal[2] and using sandboxes? [1] http://www.haskell.org/ghc/download http://www.haskell.org/ghc/download [2] http://www.haskell.org/cabal/download.html http://www.haskell.org/cabal/download.html
- pjdelport 12y agoThis release was unusually delayed, but future release should be more frequent again. To quote the release announcement http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell/2014-August/024284.html http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell/2014-August/024284.... (Mark Lentczner): "I realize this one was a long time a'comin'. I take the responsibility for the decisions that lead up to being this late, including deciding it was worth it to wait for GHC 7.8, and that this was the right time to re-write the platform build system. I hope the speed that we can now turn the platform will be evident in future releases."
- AaronFriel 12y ago> This release was unusually delayed I've heard that about Haskell Platform releases for 2 years now. I doubt that's suddenly going to change.
