Ask HN: mySQL as a Service
I couldn't find any offer for a SQL based database as a service. Register, get access to your (virtual) DB server and plug-in your web-application. Plus DoS protection, auto-scaling, ... Why doesn't exist such a service?
- tzury 17y agoIs running your mySQL at AWS good enough? have a look at here: http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=1663 http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?ex... you get all what you have asked for and even more ;-)
- mr_dbr 17y agoWhat about Amazon's SimpleDB service?http://aws.amazon.com/simpledb/ http://aws.amazon.com/simpledb/

- clintavo 17y agoI've spoken with Rackspace's people about the ability of cloud sites to scale. It is true that the sites will auto-scale but the mysql database will not auto scale - they have the same database scaling issues as everyone else.
- byoung2 17y agoI didn't realize the database didn't scale. If an automatic scaling MySQL database as a service doesn't already exist, then there is an idea for a startup! If you build it, I'm sure a lot of people would pay. EDIT: I didn't see the other comment...I guess someone at YC beat you to it!
- aupajo 17y agoSpeed? Doing db calls over the net doesn't seem too efficient.
- bensummers 17y agoWasn't there a YC startup which offered this? EDIT: Yes - http://fathomdb.com/about/home http://fathomdb.com/about/home
- mattjung 17y agothanks, that's exactly the service i thought of...
- jusob 17y agoLatency would be to high for most usage (retrieve a couple of rows a t a time). I would use it as the service is ALL my queries where taking 1 second and more on my own system, and about the same time (or better: less time) from the cloud.
- justinsb 17y agoIt does exist - we at FathomDB offer a SQL based database as a service, and have a bunch of customers happily (if quietly) using us!
