You can't deduct donations to random people on your taxes. You can deduct a business expense like a book about design or typography (presuming you're in that field). I rarely ever donate to anything that's not a charity, but am happy to buy ebooks/small things like that in order to support an author. It's hard to explain, but 'donation' seems...wrong, from a personal perspective.
