Standard Treasury (YC S13) is working to bring banking to developers
We started Standard Treasury because we were surprised at how difficult it was to build technology in the banking, finance, and payments spaces. This difficulty is because of old legacy technologies, interfaces, and designs at the banks that developers have to work with to build those types of companies.
We found that surprising. The world has moved to more modern web services and APIs, but when working with banks developers have to deal with flat files over FTP (or much much worse), bad documentation, no SDKs, tons of exceptions, funky procedures, etc.
Because of this technological gap things that should be done -- like building mobile apps for the underbanked -- just aren't possible or cost effective. Many of our fellow YC companies come to us over and over again surprised at just how hard it is to do what they want with their banks.
Standard Treasury is fixing that and building a world where tons of developers can build apps on the services that banks and other financial intermediaries provide. It might be infrastructure -- and complicated infrastructure at that -- but we believe that we are building platforms that can meaningfully impact how the world does its banking, and by extension its commerce and trade.
For a variety of reasons, we aren't a bank ourselves, but we build white-labeled developer platforms, developer tools, and more for a variety of banks. We have tons of fun problems to solve -- security and authorization and entitlements, deploying to multiple environments, testing for those environments before deployment, designing platforms for a wide range of developers, designing app stores, online banking, and more for other bank customers, etc.
