My own personal anecdote is that I thought I was having a blast going down the leadership path for about five years, until I realized that I actually wanted to stay technical. At the point I made this connection, I had lost several years of progress, skills had depleted, and technologies had moved on a lot. I'm still catching up! Consider that a cautionary tale. :-) Just my 2¢.
