More specifically, it's haram = -halal
- ars 17y agoNot exactly. Haram = Bad Deed (sin) The opposite of that is Good Deed, but actually Halal = neutral (permitted) I don't know the Arabic word for Good Deed. So: Haram = -1 Halal = 0 ??? = 1 PS. English does not seem to have a single word that means "Good Deed" (like how Sin means "Bad Deed"). But I bet arabic does. Would be interesting to know which languages have words for the various levels. (Like a word for "permitted but discouraged", and other variations.)
- ajaypopat 17y agoThis thread seems to have a discussion of sin and its antonym in various languages: http://www.yourdictionary.com/community/forums/viewthread/4299/ http://www.yourdictionary.com/community/forums/viewthread/42... This comment was funny: "A mathematician would have it as cosin, but that is going off at a tangent."
- tfh 17y agoThere's a single word for "permitted but discouraged" in arabic (makruh) but no single word for "good deed" AFAIK.
- utku_karatas2 17y ago@ars, @tfh: That should be thawab (or sawab, not sure of spelling).
- tfh 17y agoI thought of that. Thawab is the reward for good deed :) not the good deed itself.
- utku_karatas2 17y agoIt must also be used as a verb to mean "to do good deed" by itself. Not sure as I just translate from turkish to arabic :).
- wlievens 17y agoIsn't virtue the opposite of sin, in English?
- ars 17y agoI don't know. Would you say "I did my virtue for the day"? Like people say "I did my good deed for the day". I looked in a dictionary, it has a lot of meanings, some of them do match, so I guess it's pretty close.
- jacquesm 17y agoI think you should not read 'sin' to mean the same in the eyes of everybody. For different religions there are different interpretations of the word sin. The one common element they have is that they refer to a violation of the contract with the deity in charge, a transgression of the 'law' if you will. So, if 'to sin' is transgressing a law then 'being in compliance' is the opposite of that. Atheists are lucky, they are incapable of sin.
- bendtheblock 17y agoA "Deed" is a moral or brave action by default. The "Good" prefix is not required. The word for a "Bad Deed" (or Anti-Deed?) is "Sin".
- gjm11 17y agoI don't think I've ever heard "deed" without a qualifier used to mean "good deed". (According to my dictionary, it can have that meaning, but it seems to me to be pretty rare. I tried asking Google, but unfortunately almost all the early hits for "deed" are using the word in its legal sense.)

- mr_luc 17y agoOr, of course, a "dirty" deed. I am given to understand that one may engage someone to perform such deeds at highly discounted prices.
- sethg 17y agoEnglish does not seem to have a single word that means "Good Deed" (like how Sin means "Bad Deed"). "Obligation"?
