Sorry VikingCoder, I don't know where you got Bing Engineer from. We are the furthest thing away from that. We don't even know a single person from any of the Tech companies.
And what benefit could we gain from lying about the revenue figures? A number of websites that are big on social traffic (I don't want to name names but you can figure them out from googling) make similar figures because of the size of their traffic.
The reason I didn't share the urls of our site is to protect our privacy. We've found other solutions to monetize but this is just to warn fellow HNers about the reality of the situation.
- anigbrowl 12y agoYour privacy is worth $125k, in a story where you'd be the plucky underdogs? You're making serious allegations, if you're not willing to go legal as I suggested above then you should be willing to back them up.
- VikingCoder 12y ago"You could lose $125,000 if you use Google." -Anonymous poster with no evidence That sounds like the kind of thing someone from Microsoft would be happy to post. I find it hard to believe that you could successfully earn $125,000 in a matter of a few days with a new website, and yet not know A) how to place ads correctly, or B) that your account could be frozen. I guess I'm just in the wrong line of work. :) I'm glad you've found a solution for yourself, but I still find your story hard to believe. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, and all that.

Are you trying to get sued? Because this is how you get sued. > I'm glad you've found a solution for yourself, but I still find your story hard to believe. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, and all that. I too don't believe the OP. However I also don't believe that they're working for Google's competition. I just think we're getting less than 1/2 the story. Plus 125K is a HUGE amount of clicks/views for a 12 day period, they'd have to be one of the largest sites on the internet.
- VikingCoder 12y ago> And that sounds like something someone with no concept of libel would say. Pshaw. 1) OP is the one flirting with libel. 2) I responded to that with satire. 3) OP asked me to explain the satire. 4) I explained the satire, and actually did it with generalizations and no specific accusation. And you think step 4 is going to get me nailed for libel? Can you cite any legal precedent? In the United States, satire goes a long, long way. We like our free speech quite a bit. For instance, here's a Microsoft ad claiming that if you buy a Google Chromebook, you'll get something worth $0: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjQhYBKInwo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjQhYBKInwo A little satire goes a long way. But I'll let you know if Microsoft lawyers come knocking. Or maybe I should just go ahead and make a baseless Hacker News allegation with no evidence at all, using an anonymous account, asserting that Microsoft is going after people for libel for posting satire? And that they want $125,000 in settlement?
- voxic11 12y agoAre you saying I have no concept of libel? That's libelous and I will sue you!
- x0x0 12y ago$125k in under two weeks is impressive. Or a lie. Let's charitably assume you only get 5% more traffic going from 12 to 14 days (ie the missing two days fall on a weekend) then divide to get a weekly run-rate: ($125k * (1.05)/2) = $65k/week * 49 weeks (dropping a couple cause xmas is low) = $3.2M/year adsense run-rate. Are you seriously surprised that the reaction is pics or it didn't happen? Or that any ad company would flag a customer coming out of nowhere with numbers like that? From experience, this is enough to get you an adsense account manager -- I know G doesn't do customer service, but for this size account they definitely will. Start again, come up slowly, and be able to justify this to a human. edit: oops, misread 12 as 3. adjusted numbers.
