- TeMPOraL 12y agoI strongly recommend those talks. The 'magic washing machine' talk is beautiful. One of my favourite quotes of all time comes from it. And what we said, my mother and me, "Thank you industrialization. Thank you steel mill. Thank you power station. And thank you chemical processing industry that gave us time to read books."
- Evgeny 12y agoThere goes my weekend! Thank you so much.
- eiliant 12y agoIs there a tl:dr of the video?
- dredmorbius 12y agoDon't worry, be happy. Me? I'm worrying.
- InclinedPlane 12y agotl;dr the world is developing and getting richer, and a natural consequence of that is declining fertility (birth) rates, preventing the runaway population "bomb" that so many people have feared.
- dredmorbius 12y agos/natural/statistically correlated/ There are a number of countries getting wealthier which don't have falling birth rates. Most are oil exporting. Tom "Do the Math" Murphy discusses this: http://physics.ucsd.edu/do-the-math/2013/09/the-real-population-problem/ http://physics.ucsd.edu/do-the-math/2013/09/the-real-populat... Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain, especially.
- dredmorbius 12y agoBill Gates, good friend of Roslings, is far more candid in private than his public appearances and shareholders letters reveal: Appearing in The London Times in May, 2009, now only available through The Internet Archive: "Billionaire club in bid to curb overpopulation" http://web.archive.org/web/20100106010617/http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article6350303.ece http://web.archive.org/web/20100106010617/http://www.timeson... "Patricia Stonesifer, former chief executive of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which gives more than £2 billion a year to good causes, attended the Rockefeller summit. She said the billionaires met to “discuss how to increase giving” and they intended to “continue the dialogue” over the next few months. "Another guest said there was “nothing as crude as a vote” but a consensus emerged that they would back a strategy in which population growth would be tackled as a potentially disastrous environmental, social and industrial threat. "'This is something so nightmarish that everyone in this group agreed it needs big-brain answers,' said the guest. 'They need to be independent of government agencies, which are unable to head off the disaster we all see looming.'" Emphasis added. More on this by me: http://redd.it/237yxs http://redd.it/237yxs
- joeclark77 12y agoBill and Melinda Gates are abortion ideologues, in fact the biggest private funders of abortion in the world (at least $117 million in direct funding, cf. http://www.lifenews.com/2014/06/16/gates-foundation-gave-117-million-to-the-two-biggest-abortion-businesses/ http://www.lifenews.com/2014/06/16/gates-foundation-gave-117...). Bill's father was apparently a bigshot in Planned Parenthood. One has to wonder if they really support abortion because they perceive a population problem, or if it isn't the other way around.
- sp3000 12y agoHow exactly does one become an abortion ideologue? I do know of anti-abortion ideologues. Providing access to birth control so women can take more control over their lives, and in the process providing health and economic stability should be lauded. That is the reason most sane people support the work of Bill and Melinda Gates.
