Monkeys Don’t Go For Music - Unless It’s Made for Them
- Tichy 17y agoOne of the most interesting things I have read in a while, thanks!
- nico 17y agoI think while this research is very interesting, it is not complete. Humans taste in music is cultural. People like different kinds of music according to what they have been exposed and are used to. For example, I am pretty much indifferent to classical music, but I really like and "respond" to RnB and Latin music. I wasn't born with these preferences, but I learned them. It would be interesting to see if monkeys could learn to like music, just like we do. I remember my older brother used to listen to some music really loud, and at first I didn't like the music at all, but after a while I started enjoying it, and I still enjoy it because I have an emotional attachment to that music. It would also be really interesting to see if monkeys respond to some very primitive form of human music, like just drums or making sound beating sticks together or something like that.
- autarch 17y agoDespite what the article says, both the fearful and happy monkey music are not that far off from some modern music I've heard. The fearful music reminds me of some George Crumb pieces, particularly parts of Black Angels. The happy monkey music also resembles some modern compositions I've heard. I could imagine either of these monkey pieces being used to create music for humans. Of course, humans probably have a different relationship to music than most animals, since we make it for both emotional and intellectual enjoyment.
