I'm torn by the lottery. While it's called a 'tax on the stupid' here in the UK it does put millions of pounds in the hands of charities every week as well as the winner(s).
While I like the idea of the charities getting cash I dislike the 'tax on the stupid' and the 'at least some of it goes to charity' line you hear from gamblers.
- mseebach 17y agoIf you like to give cash to charities, give some money to charities. That way you'll also avoid paying into the jackpot of some sad idiot who'll blow it all on vintage champagne and a slew of sleazy new friends, and end back up in square one anyway. The lottery is a ticket to dream, and that's probably fine for some people. I'd venture a guess that most people here has a dream that not fueled by a load of cash dropping from the sky, but by some sort of merits based success.

In general, most people most of the time can act in their own interests better than the state can on their behalf, so that in general, laws that attempt to prevent people from making bad decisions usually decrease overall utility.
- billpg 17y agoAre we as a society so bad at giving to charity that we have to outsource with the lottery and the christmas card industry to do it for us?
