Our primary server names identify the location (for us), and we try to keep it very short: <data center><rack><unit> So for example: sea1r001u01. Our team in the data centers provide the initial name based on where they place the server. The unit value starts at 01 at the top of the rack and increases sequentially. This means that if we have a hardware issue, the data center teams only need the hostname to know exactly where the server is located and get to it.
