I wonder even if he is cleared in Sweden he would still be self imprisoned in the embassy, since he broke UK law by breaching his bail conditions?
- dspillett 12y agoBreaching his bail conditions would be a lesser offence though.
- onion2k 12y agoStill serious enough to be arrested, and as soon as he's arrested the US authorities will request extradition which the UK will agree to. Leaving the embassy is certainly going to lead to a life behind bars in America. It doesn't matter what any of the charges are outside of the US.
- Tyrannosaurs 12y agoIf that was going to happen then why didn't it happen when he was in court in the UK? Remember, he was in the UK on bail for months before he went near the embassy.
- hga 12y agoA year and a half on bail, from 16 December 2010 to 19 June 2012 per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assange_v_Swedish_Prosecution_Authority https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assange_v_Swedish_Prosecution_.... Also per that Wikipedia article, he fled to the U.K. while under suspicion in Sweden, and "He left Sweden on 27 September 2010. The Swedish authorities have asserted that this is the same day that they notified Assange's lawyer of his imminent arrest."
- aylons 12y agoHe is not in the embassy because of the Brits, he is in the embassy because he fears being deported to the US by the Swedens.
- jamespo 12y agoWhich doesn't make sense, who is more friendly with the US, Britain or Sweden? EDIT: what I'm clarifying is that he's not avoiding Sweden because he thinks they'll deport him to the US, that would have been more likely staying in the UK.
- rbanffy 12y agoHe has to step out of the embassy and enter the UK before he can go to Sweden.
- Fuxy 12y agoIsn't a embassy car considered embassy territory?
- Tyrannosaurs 12y agoHe's still got to get from the embassy to the car (remember that the embassy is a two bedroom apartment - it's not got underground parking on embassy soil a car could get into) and then from the car to the plane. A bunch of the newspapers here (the UK) looked into this at the time and the short version was there was no realistic, workable way of getting him out without the UK co-operating.
- KMag 12y agoThere's no such thing as "embassy territory".[1] Contrary to popular belief, diplomatic missions do not enjoy full extraterritorial status and are not sovereign territory of the represented state. Rather, the premises of diplomatic missions remain under the jurisdiction of the host state while being afforded special privileges (such as immunity from most local laws) by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. - frandroid 12y agoEither way, he should fear both Sweden and Britain.
- sigzero 12y agoThe answer is "yes".
