Ah, I remember programming on terminals.
edit: Most places I've worked/people I've talked to prefer 100-120 chars.
- barrkel 17y agoIt's not just useful for terminals, but for readibility - though I would put the limit a bit further out, at maybe 100 or 110.
- cduan 17y agoI still do. Ok, virtual terminals (though I did use a VT220 for a good while). But I do still stick to an 80x24 screen. My theory is that if my code is too complicated for me to understand without expanding the screen, then it needs to be refactored or reorganized.
- barrkel 17y ago120x43 for me, thanks. 120 is a nice width, and I inherited 43 from the old EGA mode, and together they make a reasonable aspect ratio for cascading on the desktop.
- warp 17y agostill useful advice, I always have two source files side-by-side. (At 1024x600 my eeepc has just enough room for a 160 column terminal in a font-size I can read).
- GeneralMaximus 17y agoMany FOSS projects follow that coding guideline. Helpful for people who program without GUIs (over SSH, for example) or on netbooks.
- anamax 17y ago<= 80 character lines are also convenient for printing.
