Ask HN: What preparation did you do to land your first remote job?

Or what background did you have? Did you actively pursue or was contacted? What do you believe was the greatest thing that made you attractive for the employer? I am trying to find work at a startup-like environment, however not living at the center of all the excitement(the USA) makes it impossible. The next viable option is to try to find remote work. I have 6 months of dedicated practice starting from 30 days, and would love to hear from people who made it, or from employer who hired on their criterion. Thank you.
