Lately I've been using Textadept - http://caladbolg.net/luadoc/textadept2/manual/1_Introduction.html http://caladbolg.net/luadoc/textadept2/manual/1_Introduction... - and I like it a lot. It's a lot like vi in that most menu items have a key sequence, you can split buffers, but everything is in GTK. It's also 100% extensible through Lua, the only drawback is that there aren't many themes and theming it yourself could be a little smoother.
