If its "Your data. Your privacy. You’re in control.".
Why won't they let me self-host? The two things don't add up.
- ghayes 12y agoMy primary concern is my house becoming part of Google's walled garden. "Oh, my garage door doesn't work anymore as it is controlled exclusively by 'Works with Nest.'"
- bybjorn 12y agoYup, being locked out of your Google account will mean no email AND no access to the car in your garage! :p Too many eggs in in one basket.
- kyrra 12y agoCould you imagine the PR fallout if that did really happen? I'm pretty sure Google is going to be smart here and have graceful fallbacks when the interconnects don't work (for whatever reason).
- smacktoward 12y agoOr worse, someone hacks Nest and turns your garage door into an online game of Hungry Hungry Hippos.
- mhurron 12y ago> Why won't they let me self-host? Self host and maybe I'd care about it. I could put it on it's own segregated wifi connection with no access to the rest of the world and the data would be mine. I am not interested in feeding Google.
- rlpb 12y agoThere's a huge support cost in providing self-host, together with an impact on image (ease of use, etc). With the tiny proportion of people who actually would self-host, I don't think it makes any business sense. I want a self-host, and generally resist on any technology unless I can, but at the same time I don't expect any company looking to sell products to actually do it. So self-host generally only goes hand-in-hand with non-commercial projects.
- antidaily 12y agoAnd Nest already sells your data, right?
