Lambda Calculus is actually extremely simple, and in my opinion, boring. When I took a unit on it in college, I guess the prof didn't do a good job motivating it. It's just substitution, and sometimes renaming variables. Nothing really useful, innovative, or interesting, except as representing computable functions.
