Very complex debates happened for centuries between scholars of Vedas (Hindu) and the Buddhists. In India the followers of Vedas were largely successful and Buddhism actually moved on away from India. The closest description to what modern science is doing is changing the colors of a lightbulb and then claiming they can produce electricity.
