I'm also suspect I've seen a coverage of a research doc about bugs where nils were a noticeable share but I've no idea where that is. One of the recent bugs in my app that was causing a crash from time to time involved the platform library returning nil when there was no user input in the text field rather than the empty string it promised in the doc.
