I was under the impression that client side crypto was always a bad idea, is this really news?

  End-to-end encryption basically requires crypto to be done on the client side. But there are different kinds of "client side." The JavaScript sandbox is basically impossible to lock down. The plug-in that Google is developing is a much different beast.
