Since the majority of non-menial jobs now REQUIRE a degree (often any degree), if you want to be in the middle class, you need a college degree. One explanation I can think of to require a degree for everything is that it proves that you can commit to a long term goal and achieve it. The cynic in my thinks it's just a ploy to have a debt-riddle workforce who will be scared to make waves because they're always one check away form insolvency.
