I read an article the other day about how jihadist software developers were complaining that higher-up leaders in their terrorist organization refused to switch away from GMail. And this from the very groups that should have known better! I can only assume that problem has been fixed after Snowden leaked PRISM, but it illustrates the mentality you speak of quite vividly.
