My personal take out from this article is that typing on a keyboard is usually seen as distracting and somewhat less natural than hand writing. I would think a signifiant number of students would already type faster than they can write, and wouldn't even need to continually look at the screen to take readable enough notes. At least that's was my experience in college after 3/4 years on IRC.
