Here's something that's even more "out there": an experimental OS and programming environment where all protection is done statically, at compile time. You can do things as crazy as run all "user" processes and the kernel in the same (kernel-mode) address space safely, because the system compiler enforces type-safety and memory-safety. It's pretty cool! (my memory is a bit weak on this paper so some of the details might be off, but it's well worth the read)
