If I put myself down as an expert on something I would want to be prepared to give a complete run down of the internal workings, important design decisions that drove the implementation, etc. For example if I wanted to say I was an expert in C++ I would have to ask myself, do I really know as much about C++ as Bjarne Stroustrup, Scott Meyers, etc?
