I have worked in cubes, private offices, shared offices, and open offices. For productivity and thinking, I found the physical barriers were proportional to the thinking. For communication, in any of these, company IM worked quite well most of the time, and when it failed, face to face worked out. I strongly advocate for private or team-member-shared offices at any chance I get. It's just that much better.
