I'm curious how easy is it to write software to control a multirotor you built yourself. One of the big appeals of the AR drone was a fairly easy to use Linux SDK.

Arducopter is open source: https://code.google.com/p/arducopter/ https://code.google.com/p/arducopter/ You can tinker around with the source code. Memory of the APM is limited, though.
