I really think that this is the answer. There is no other way to create iOS apps today. You must own an Apple branded computer to do so and for that reason there are always going to be a high percentage of people with a MacBook of some sort just to do the compile. I can spin up a VM of Linux on anything, but I can't legally do the same with OS X without having the hardware.
