Ask HN: What's your favorite note-taking app?

I'm in the market for a good (hopefully free!) note-taking app. I'd prefer something that runs locally (as opposed to cloud-based), is fully searchable, and supports tagging as well as markdown. Whether you're a .txt Luddite or an Evernote addict, what do you like and why? Do you have any recommendations that meet my specifications?
