My solution has been to recommend friend and family to switch to http://DuckDuckGo.com http://DuckDuckGo.com (or just http://ddg.gg http://ddg.gg)
This may seem to be an impossible task, but in days not too long ago people switched search providers often. I went from the curated links of Yahoo, to Lycos, to AltaVista, to Webcrawler, to Google, and now DDG.
Google got a lot of mileage out of my in my mind with their motto "Don't be Evil", because I had some trust for them. I don't trust them anymore, and I regularly explain to others why they should no longer trust them either.
- gcb0 12y agowhat is the love this crowd has with duckduck?! it is nothing more than bing with EXTRA ads! also, it display a retarded "this page uses javascript. click here for the content" or something, every time i use it from my HTPC with firefox+noscript.
- freehunter 12y agoIt's about not being tracked while you're searching.
- anonbanker 12y agohttps://duckduckgo.com/html/ https://duckduckgo.com/html/ should solve your htpc's problem.
- vezzy-fnord 12y agohttps://startpage.com https://startpage.com and https://ixquick.com https://ixquick.com are the alternatives I use. The former only proxies queries from Google, whereas the latter works on multiple engines.
- dublinben 12y agoUsing a proxy for Google does absolutely nothing to avoid their judgements of websites. Startpage will not provide you with URLs that Google has banished. As an example compare the following results for "Game of Thrones S04E06" on each site: https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&q=game%20of%20thrones%20S04E06 https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&q=game%20of%20thro... https://startpage.com/do/search?q=game+of+thrones+s04e06 https://startpage.com/do/search?q=game+of+thrones+s04e06 https://duckduckgo.com/?q=game+of+thrones+s04e06 https://duckduckgo.com/?q=game+of+thrones+s04e06 The first two provide mostly spammy results or subtitles. The DDG results are mostly real sites with torrent or streaming copies of the show available. Which search engine do you think is more useful?
- goldenkey 12y agoDuckduckgo crawls a fraction of the web that Google does. Would you like a Tomato or a Cherry Tomato?
- milesf 12y agoAnd Google crawls a fraction of a fraction of the entire internet, last count around 0.04% http://webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/11740/how-much-of-the-internet-is-indexed-by-google http://webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/11740/how-much-of... All I care about are the quality of the results, and for that DDG does a pretty good job.
- goldenkey 12y agoDDG has horrible results because it barely scratches the surface of Google's magnitude of results. Sorry Chuck, it's an inferior product
- goldenkey 12y agoIrrelevant. Google has an index reds of times bigger than DuckDuckGo. Therefore it's results can be much more accurate. You can't debate that DDG is an inferior engine, it's fact.
- dredmorbius 12y agoMy understanding (and I'm a DDG user) is that DDG largely utilizes other services, and to a large extent Bing, for its search results. But their own moral authority and index reach are limited. That said, I still encourage using DDG on both privacy and increasing search engine competition grounds.
