You mean there are significant subcultures of Saudi Arabia which don't place women as second class, support archaic death penalties for adultery, and would fall under the label "Saudi Arabian culture"?
- azth 12y agoThey definitely have problems, I didn't say otherwise. See my other comment, Iran has the death penalty for female rape victims. So labeling the Saudi culture as "truly inferior" doesn't make sense to be honest. They have education facilities and higher colleges for women, including engineering and science majors. Look up the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology for instance (though it's coed). Hopefully, with education things will improve for everyone -- including women. There are already signs of this.
- Peaker 12y agoInferior as compared with Western culture, I meant. Both Iran and Saudi Arabia are, IMO.
- azth 12y agoEach has their own plusses an minuses; it's hard to make a sweeping statement that as a whole one culture is superior or inferior to another. Look up what Leonard Sax has to say about today's Western (particularly American) culture.
- smnrchrds 12y ago> Iran has the death penalty for female rape victims For God's sake. Did you read the article you linked to? Even that article fails to mention many details. She was sentenced to death for premeditated murder. She argued that she had the right to kill the man because he tried to rape her. There were evidence supporting her side (the man stopped to buy condoms on the way to the apartment, etc); there were evidence against her (she sent a text message to a friend saying "I'm gonna kill him tonight", the knife was purchased not long ago suggesting it was bought for exactly this reason, etc). The trial and the appeals process took 7 years. It's unfortunate that little of the media coverage is available in English, all of which are from the same point of view. I have read the interviews with both parties' families and followed the news as new revelations were made. I cannot say for sure what is right and what is wrong, but I can say this with certainty: It was a very complicated case. Reducing it to one sentence is ridiculous, but if you have to, the sentence should be "Iran has the death penalty for female premeditated murderers if the crime is proven in criminal court and held up in the appeals court".
- azth 12y agoThe article I linked to probably wasn't the best example. However, that is not to say that what I was referring to did not happen. There are numerous examples of such.
