I haven't been following the development of this. I was surprised by one tidbit on in the Wikipedia entry that CoreOS started as a fork of ChromeOS.
Does anybody have any idea why an OS focused on large, distributed clusters would begin life as a fork of a user-focused OS in the everything-is-a-web-app vein?
What did the latter have that was a useful starting point for the former?
- robszumski 12y ago(CoreOS employee) The ChromeOS update model was exactly what we were shooting for with this project, so it made sense to start from that. The operating system itself has started to diverge from the ChromeOS beginnings but we still use the same tools, such as repo [1], to build release images and such. Our OS updates are distributed via the Omaha protocol [2] just like ChromeOS.
