If you want to try an alternative, look at Mnemosyne: http://mnemosyne-proj.org/ http://mnemosyne-proj.org/ I use this daily for my foreign language studies. It has less features than Anki, but the interface is pretty clean, intuitive to use, and has a powerful plugin system. Plus, the whole thing is open source, written in Python, and highly extensible.

Wow, I just installed mnemosyne, it looks so much simpler than Anki. I'll be giving it a run this weekend.

Is there an iOS client perchance? I don't see anything listed specifically at the page.

You can run it on a server and use it over http. To my knowledge, there are only (unofficial) clients for Android.

I found a few apps that appear to sync, but they don't work all that great. Maybe I should build an app for ios as a side project.
