The second option (turning off all guidance) is effectively what I did (see https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7708105 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7708105). Upon recognising that we had no controlled trajectories that were viable, we just tried to reduce kinetic energy as fast as possible without making any trajectory changes at all.
