What is frightening, the quality of the idea and that FB came up with it, or that only FB is in a position to pull this off?

- pg 19y agoMore the nature of the idea. It's a smart direction to go in, just as better-quality search results were for Google in 1998.
- whacked_new 19y agoThe nature of the idea, as in how it exploits a well-known psychological phenomenon? Better-quality search results was a technical advancement for Google, but I wouldn't say this is quite of the same nature. No doubt it's a beautiful plan, but unlike the Brin-Page paper, the ideas behind this has been around for a good while. There are plenty of ideas from research that can be similarly incorporated into a stronger advertising machine. For example, variable interval reinforcement is the most effective conditioning paradigm, which would be very useful for advertisers. It's fairly well-known, but not many companies are in a position to employ it.
- whacked_new 19y agoIn all my ignorance, I'm reposting to say that I disagree with the approach as said in the article. If one needs to create a personalized profile for a product, then one needs to friend, or fan, the product profile, it is a less efficient strategy. There are better ways to do this. But anyhow, it's facebook, so they'll probably get it.
