I ask people to use the back of their finger (the fingernail side), instead of the part with all the oil. Its a nice compromise and keeps off most smudges while not taking away people's ability to express themselves. As for a pen, that simply warrants breaking someone's hand for a first offense. Word will get around quick after that ;).
