Afaik, the cable companies got virtual monopolies to certain regions/cities/neighborhoods with the claim that they were like utilities. Laying cables and maintaining them was similar to what power companies do. And now, we are finding out the rates of the cable companies are going up and up because we are basically financing their expansion into other businesses. It's like my local power company raising rates so that they can go into business of running data centers.
