i just started using Google+ actively..... and I'm using it exactly like what techcrunch describes: as a platform, not a product. I use Picassa to sort my photos and post to google+ web albums for family to use. I use Google+ Hangouts for IM, and I am using Google+ itself for credentials (OAuth). The actual Google+ product, never use it. It's actually a good thing that they figure out usage patterns and adapt their strategy to reflect it.
